The fragrance summer defaults to
Some fragrances become categories. Light Blue launched in 2001 and within a few years had effectively defined what a Mediterranean summer scent smells like — so much so that a great deal of what came after is measured against it whether or not anyone says so out loud.
The formula is simple and that is the point: Sicilian lemon and apple over cedar. There is no clever twist and no hidden depth. It is crisp, clean citrus executed properly, and executing simple things properly is harder than it sounds.
How it opens, how it wears
The opening is bright lemon with a green apple crispness alongside it, and it is genuinely refreshing in the physical sense — the kind of smell that makes a hot room feel a few degrees cooler. Neither note is sweet; the apple is tart rather than candied, which is what keeps the whole thing from reading as a fruit fragrance.
Cedar underneath gives it a dry, faintly woody floor that stops it evaporating into nothing. Aggregated owner reporting puts longevity at moderate, which is the fragrance's one consistent criticism, and projection at moderate too. Where it fits
Summer, spring, daytime, and heat in particular. This is one of the few fragrances that genuinely improves in high temperatures, where heavier compositions turn cloying. It is excellent for holidays, outdoor events and hot commutes, and it is entirely office-appropriate.
It does not work in cold weather, where it reads thin and slightly bleak, and it is not an evening fragrance. For those, the women's ranking has better-suited options.
What the 2025 reformulation changed
Dolce&Gabbana relaunched Light Blue in 2025 for the line's twenty-fifth anniversary, and the bottles now sold are that version. Olivier Cresp, who composed the original, reworked it: the note structure people buy this for is unchanged — Sicilian lemon and Granny Smith apple over cedar — and reviews of the new formula describe it as very close to the old one, slightly stronger on the sweet citrus and lasting a little longer. It is still an eau de toilette built on citrus, so "a little longer" is the honest ceiling, not a transformation. The relaunched bottles are also priced meaningfully above what the outgoing formula sold for, which is the one change worth weighing before you buy.
The honest complaint
Longevity, and the reformulation softens it rather than solving it. Moderate is accurate and many wearers report less. If you need a fragrance to last a full working day from one application, this is not that fragrance, and reapplication is part of owning it. The second is ubiquity, which after two decades is extreme. In July you will smell this on other people regularly. It is a well-made fragrance that has been worn so widely it no longer says anything about you, and if a fragrance being personal matters, that is disqualifying.
Who should buy it
Buy Light Blue if you want the reference-standard summer citrus and do not mind that it is popular. Buy it if you live somewhere hot and heavier fragrances have not worked for you. Buy it as a safe gift — it is very widely liked and it is hard to get wrong.
Skip it if you need longevity from a single application. Skip it if you want something distinctive. And skip it if you are shopping for a year-round bottle, because this is a genuine specialist — the more versatile options will serve you better if you can only own one.
